Description

Captured from a bortle 3 site just outside of Joshua Tree National Park, California.

To create the diffraction spike pattern, I constructed an aperture mask out of cardboard and guitar strings. While many astrophotographers don't like star spikes, I've grown to really appreciate what they add photographically and aesthetically to certain objects/targets. This was my first attempt with the aperture mask. I really like what they add to the image - and, of course, how they give it a JWST "vibe".

This is also my first image using the 0.76x reducer for the 80PHQ, which brings the scope down to f/5.7. Overall, I'm impressed. The reducer adds a bit more CA to the corner stars, but all-in-all the field remains pretty flat over an APS-C sensor.
